Milk
46. Watch 75 movies [6/75] (more info)
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay American to hold public office. The movie Milk chronicles his rise to public office and subsequent assassination. I found it to be a fascinating story, and I liked that the movie included photos and footage of the actual people and events. And while Harvey Milk definitely made many advances for the gay rights struggle (and even more rights have been granted over the years), I was still struck with how little some things have changed – many people still hold the same beliefs they did over 30 years ago. I was also surprised/interested to learn that it was during the trial for the assassination of Harvey Milk (and the mayor George Moscone) that the Twinkie defense was first introduced.
This movie wasn’t the greatest movie I’ve ever watched, but based on historical significance it is definitely worth the watch. One small thing that I found hilarious – when Harvey Milk first got up to speak, he stood up on box labeled SOAP.
