69. Give 5 “just because I can!” gifts [3/5] (more info)
Here is my spiel:
My brother recently moved to the east coast to a new AFB. He’s going through some personal struggles and trying to work on doing things for himself (he’s a people pleaser). He’s reading a book by Stephen Covey (I think the 7 habits one) and how you have to have an end goal in mind, as well as little goals to achieve that end goal.
This is what I would like to do for him:
- Send him a journal to write in
- Write motivational quotes in the journal before sending it
- Also give him a chart of some sort so that he can write down his goals and maybe even stick the chart on his wall.
I need help with the last two.
What is your favorite motivational quote(s)? Or, what quote makes you want to be a better person? Does anyone know of a good chart or spreadsheet or something to track your goals?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My brother is a great kid, and I hate to see him struggle. I think this would help him. Or at least make him feel like someone cares. :)
From TaraSG: 38. Run in five 5k races
Gray Ghost Run [3/5]
October 31st, 2009
This was the much anticipated race against Kyle. There were A LOT of people, so it wasn’t the best race to use as a competition. Because this was a Halloween race (and indeed, the annual Halloween parade follows the 5k race), many people were dressed up. I went as a soccer goalie, though this was mainly because it allowed me to wear a long sleeved shirt and goalie gloves so that I could stay warm. But the weather turned out to be nice and these extra precautions against the cold probably hurt me more than it helped. This was not a very good race for me. I struggled through most of the race just to keep running, and it was my worst time (at 34 minutes and change) of my races thus far. In the end, Kyle did beat me although it was only by about a minute and now I know that it is possible for me to beat him – I just need to be on the top of my game.
I would definitely consider running this race next year, just because it’s so much fun to dress up and the huge amount of people who come out to watch. But I wouldn’t run it to better my race time or to race against someone again, because it’s just not designed that way. And as for losing to Kyle – he gets to keep his manhood. I don’t really mind losing to Kyle; I am more upset at myself for not keeping up with my running, which resulted in an off day. However, I have challenged Kyle to the best two out of three races. The next race? Possibly in May. When it’s a little warmer outside. :)
Previous races:
Bunker Stampede on 9/12/2009
Walk for Hope on 10/10/2009
When you read a review of a movie or book (or even a restaurant?) on a blog, what do you look for? What is necessary? Not necessary?
Because I always feel like I write crappy reviews. How can I change that?
Tell me!

The skin pulled tight across her
face and she waited for something
more – no, better – to befall her.
It was like tumbling into a
creeping crevice. Dark, biting and constricting.
She was lost to it now.

The 5-8 Club
Minneapolis is known for its Juicy (or Jucy) Lucy, which is a cheeseburger with the cheese inside the burger, and the 5-8 Club (Juicy Lucy) and Matt’s Bar (Jucy Lucy) both claim to be the “inventor.” Because I’ve already tried the Jucy Lucy at Matt’s Bar, I figured I had to try the Juicy Lucy at the 5-8 Club. Of course, it’s been so long since I’ve been to Matt’s Bar that it was hard to remember exactly what it was like and I did have blue cheese in this burger instead of the usual (American?) – I have a great love of blue cheese and I simply couldn’t pass it up.
I can’t say that I was very impressed with the food. But since this wasn’t the original 5-8 Club in Minneapolis (we chose to eat at the one closest to us), I would be interested in visiting the original to see if it is any different. :)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ****
Ok, another Harry Potter book down! My goal is to finish the Harry Potter series before the next movie comes out. I’ve already finished three – and all during the semester. I probably should have been doing other things such as homework today, but you have to admit – Harry Potter is much more entertaining than reading about a cross-sectional study of interlanguage pragmatic development. I gave this book four stars.
69. Give 5 “just because I can!” gifts [3/5] (more info)
So my brother just moved on to his next AFB and managed to give away and/or forget his blankets. Although he requested it and my mom bought the material, I’m still counting the fleece tie blanket as a “just because I can!” gift, mostly because I did all the work and I wasn’t forced to do it. I did it out of the goodness of my heart. And it was a lot of work that may or may not give me a tension headache soon. So yes.

Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking ****
A comprehensive guide to teaching listening and speaking to English language learners. For being a required read, it was relatively painless and full of useful information in less than 200 pages. If you are teaching English in an ESL or EFL environment, I would definitely recommend this book.

Bold colors slip softly into pastels
the world tilts on its side
Slowly fluttering beats the untamed heart
circling around the carefully constructed walls
slipping deeper into cold dark waters
finding love on the other side

2 Days in Paris (2007) **.5
In celebration of my fall break from school, I decided to put away all my homework and watch a movie this afternoon. I chose 2 Days in Paris. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right movie mood, but this movie just didn’t strike a chord with me. It is about a couple who goes to visit the woman’s parents in Paris and how the couple continually runs into the woman’s exes. Drama ensues. It’s a love story without it being a typical love story. Blah blah. I’m terrible at reviews.
